Road Worthy

The trailer we chose is called an OPEN UTILITY Trailer. They aren't designed specifically for bikes but we like these because they can be used to haul just about anything with minimal modding so they're much more useful than trailers specifically made for bikes. Ours is a 6 x 12 and has a gvwr of 2990 lbs . We're going to need to do a few things to modify it for our trip, but it should be complete with just $75.00 in hardware and a few hours sweat. We need to add a few more tie-down points in key locations to hold the three bikes we are mounting properly. We'll also add chocks to keep the front wheels in place.

The trailer itself is a great upgrade from the old one we had. It has several new features like an easily removable tailgate. I removed it for the trip back to Key West and was able to get 14.5 mpg ... that's 2.5 mpg better than the old trailer with the gate up. It also has 4 steel tiedown loops welded to the frame near the four corners. The new trailer also has full steel protection for the tailights as well as 7 auxiliary lights to keep it all safe and visible to other drivers at night. There is also a good amount of red/white reflective stickers already on the rear and sides. Nice. It towed very straight and followed the car like it was on rails.

I feel very good about having a nice solid trailer under our bikes.

We chose to pick-up our trailer since Chad and I were in the area on business. However, they will ship anywhere in the world.
